Davidson College
July 11, 1855
Dear Brother,
I have taken my seat this morning in order to answer your letter which I received on the fourth and to give you the news although there is nothing of importance going on at the present. We had a very fine party here on the fourth and there would have been a great many more here if it had not rained it was raining all the time untill diner and the wer over twenty ladies here as it was and some very fine ladies ther was not any from our neighborhood but I suppose ther weuld have been if it had not rained.
I suppose you heard that Lusy a Stafford is going to get married I do not know how soon it will come off but some time shortly she if going to get married to Mr. J. Spring from Charlotte.
Crops lok very well now Corn is very good about here , wheat is good, I beleave Cotton is not so good, it is very small for this time of the year, grain is very scarce in this part of the contry, corn is worth .90 a 1.00 per bushel flour 9.00 a 10.00 per barrel. Cotton is bring a very good prise from .10 to .12 Bill you ought ot be home to see Charlotte it has improved more than any town you ever saw. They have got the rail road beyon Salisbury.
There is great excitement between the know nothing and democrat parties there are great many know nothings about here most of the students are in favor of ____. Ther is not more than five or six democrats on the hill the know nothing could always out argue us before last night one of the old students came bace and throw them all in the dark if all the students were here that were her before Christmast I suppose there would be some fiting about if for the is considerable excitement about it now. The democrat canidate for Congress is ____. The know nothing is slow it will be hard ____between then I do not know which will beat.
We are getting a long very well here now, commencement will be her in four weeks and then I will get to rest then. I would like very mutch to see you but as you say the _____ sure is ______ to ___but I hope it will not always be so. I heard form home last week they were all well there. I have been very well since I came here. I must bring my leter to a close the male will start in a few minutes. Bill wright to me soon and tell me when you are coming home and what you intend doing if you please, direct your leters here if you write so it can come before the 8th of August if not directit home. ut please wright so it can come here, wright soon as you can and excust all mistakes and bad writing for I am in a great heuuy do not let anyone see this for I am shamed of it.
