Last week, we looked at reading lists prepared for students, either as required reading before entering college or as suggestions for continued learning after graduation. This week we have two lists for recreational reading as well as two for academic enrichment.
Going in chronological order, the first list comes from the May 1963 alumni magazine. “Planned Your Summer Reading?” provides suggestions from faculty members Gill Holland, Malcolm Lester, John McGeachy, James Gross, Henry Lilly, and Chalmers Davidson. Titles suggested include:
Walker Percy – The Moviegoer
Charles Haskins – The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century
Flannery O’Connor – A Good Man Is Hard to Find
Robert Frost – The Complete Poems
William Percy – Lanterns on the Levee
Dumas Malone – Jefferson and the Ordeal of Liberty

The next list is the Summer 1969 recommended reading list for incoming freshman. Included on this list was:
Isaac Asimov – The New Intelligent Man’s Guide to Science
Peter Berger – Invitation to Sociology
Miguel Cervantes – Don Quixote
E. Clinton Gardner – Biblical Faith and Social Ethics
Robert Heilbroner – The Worldly Philosophers
Karl Jaspers – Way to Wisdom
George Bernard Shaw – Man and Superman
Stendal – The Red and the Black
Wright and Fuller – The Book of the Acts of God
In 1978, the Center for Special Studies (now the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies) compiled two lists: 1) Books to Introduce interested readers to a variety of academic and professional fields, 2) Books for Casual Summer Reading. There is an overlap of the faculty making recommendations. On the “interested readers” list under English, Gill Holland recommended:
W. J. Bate – Keats
W. Allen – The English Novel
Wellek & Warren – Theory of Literature
while on the “casual” list his suggestions included
Glenway Wescott – The Pilgrim Hawk
R. L. Stevenson – The Beach of Falesa
Dickens – A Tale of Two Cities.
Other faculty making recommendations include Verna Case, Bob Manning, Ben Klein, Randy Kincaid, George Labban, Randy Nelson, Ed Palmer, Ernie Patterson, Max Polle
y, Merle Schuh, Frank Bliss, Charlie Cornwell and Louis Ortmayer. Staff members Rush Otey and Ken Wood also contributed.
