Home (again): locally-owned & home grown

It’s July in the South. The humidity is high, cicadas are buzzing, crepe myrtles are slowly dropping their blooms, and gardens are producing plentiful supplies of tomatoes and squash. It’s the perfect time to grab a glass of iced tea, sit out on your porch, and read.

What to read? There are lots of lists of recommended titles, but I want to highlight two new collections for summer-time browsing. Both are local and home-grown.

Fire up the wifi and check out:

BrowZine

BrowZineLogo-FINAL COLORBrowZine is a library app that lets you browse and read current and recent issues of the library’s e-journals on your tablet or smartphone. It’s great for tracking journals in your subject area. You select the journals you want to read or track, and BrowZine links you to the library’s online subscriptions. BrowZine will even notify you when new issues are published.

A decade ago, when most of our journals were in print, we had shelves of “current periodicals” on the main floor of the library. Now, you can create your own virtual shelves of favorite titles and access the content from anywhere (even your porch).

To get started, download the app, then simply open BrowZine and choose “Davidson College” from the list of libraries. You can then start selecting journals and adding them to your bookshelves.

For more information, see our guide to BrowZine.

NC Live Home Grown eBook Collection

NC LIVE Home Grown eBook CollectionThis brand-new collection is a pilot project developed by NC LIVE, a state-wide consortium of academic and public libraries. Our library is a member of NC LIVE and contributed funds towards the building of this collection.

Why is it “Home grown”? The ebooks in the collection were published by eight North Carolina publishers, and North Carolina librarians selected the titles, which North Carolina libraries are providing to North Carolinians statewide.

What also makes this collection notable:

  • It contains over 1,200 works of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
You’ll find popular titles and scholarly ones, novels, cookbooks, travel guides, histories, biographies, and more.
  • There are no limits on downloads or checkouts (use the books for as long as you want).
  • You can read the books in your browser or download them to your tablet.

Want more information? See our guide to the NC LIVE Home Grown eBook Collection.

Start browsing this new collection, and let us know what you think of it!

“Read local” and enjoy the rest of your summer.
