New Era for E.H. Little Library

Monday night, August 25th was the beginning of a new chapter in the life and history of E.H. Little Library.  For the first time, we did not perform our “usual” closing routine for the Library because access is now available for all Students, Faculty and Staff of Davidson twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week.  We will continue to staff the library Information Desk for the same hours as we have in the past, with no change in patron service.  Patrons may check out items when the library is closed with the self-checkout station.   However, for security reasons, the doors lock at 11:00pm Sunday through Thursday nights, and patrons will need to use their CatCards for access.  This also applies after 9:00pm on Friday and Saturday nights during the academic semester.  Campus Police has also asked us not to provide any after-hour access to the building during academic breaks since there is such a low volume of traffic in the building.

The good news is that, beginning our first day of classes, being available all night was a huge success!  Listed below are the door counts from the first week for the main floor exit.  A counter will also be installed on the ground floor door hopefully this week so we will have a more accurate tally of the after-hours usage.  We, of course, expect this number to grow significantly as the semester progresses.

As part of this expansion of our services, the 24 hour study room was converted into a beautiful, state of the art, technology-rich classroom for professors whose classes require extensive technology.  The room, B110, has already become very popular and is scheduled for classes every day of the week .  Access will be by CatCard only after 4:00pm when classes are scheduled to end in order to insure that only Davidson affiliated patrons can enter.  You may enjoy this short 4 minute video of the amazing transformation of that space.

As you use our building all night long, we ask that you keep these security tips in mind:

  • Larcenies are relatively uncommon at Davidson, however to keep your property safe, please do not leave your valuables unattended.  You may check out a lock for a daily use locker before the Information Desk closes.
  • Do be observant.  Make sure you are aware of your environment and know where the exits are located.
  • Call the Davidson Security Office on duty to report any suspicious persons or behavior – 704-609-0344.  This number is posted at the Information Desk telephone every night at closing.  SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING!
  • There is safety in numbers.  If possible, avoid working in secluded or remote area of the library after-hours.
  • If you feel uncomfortable getting on the elevator with someone – do not get on – call a friend or the police.
  • Stay aware and STAY SAFE.
