Social Studies Lesson Plans

Teaching students to work with maps and historical documents is one of the most critical tasks of a Social Studies classroom.  The lessons linked below uniquely offer students the practice they require working with such documents while investigating local Charlotte-area history.  Each of these lessons require students to utilize historical documents to assess how communities change over time. Documents provided by the Davidson College Library’s Archive and Special Collection “Under Lake Norman” allow us to examine Davidson, NC as a case study; however, the essential learning outcomes are universal and can be applied to any Social Studies classroom.

Lessons:

Constructing Historical Narratives: Lake Norman as a case study of social, geopolitical, economic and historical change in the Charlotte region.

Mapping Change: Using maps of Davidson, NC to investigate how communities change over time.
