One of the very visually interesting items in the Rare Book Room is a volume printed by the United States GPO (Government Printing Office) as Vol. 40, part 2 of the House Miscellaneous Documents, 52nd Congress, 1st Session, 1891-1892.  Its title is War Atlas, 1861-65, and it is an incredible research tool for anyone who has an interest in the military aspects of the American Civil War.

Large in size (about 46 ½ cm by 39 ½ cm) it contains numerous plates including:

  • Maps of various cities instrumental to the war
  • City occupation maps
  • Maps of battlefields
