Lake Norman’s Shorelines

Introduction:

This site provides an examination of the Lake Norman shoreline, and how it is protected. Lake Norman is the largest body of water in the Catawba-Wataree Watershed, and the largest lake in North Carolina. With a shoreline of 520 miles and an area of more than 50 square miles, Lake Norman is actually an inland sea. The shoreline of Lake Norman is a vital area to focus on protecting, because it represents a boundary between the lake ecosystem and the anthropogenic pollutants that surround it.

This large body of water is relatively clean, and the surrounding pollutants have been managed to prevent significant degradation. Despite this, the sheer size of the Lake Norman, and the diverse range of uses along it’s shoreline, have created the need for a range of management organizations and policies.

The Lake Norman shoreline is under the jurisdiction of four North Carolina counties, Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba, and Lincoln. It is also managed and protected by both Duke Power, the corporation responsible for the creation of the lake, and FERC (the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.)

These organizations have created a range of classifications for the shoreline, which determine how shoreline is treated. These classifications consider both current and possible future uses of shoreline, to assist planning responsible development.
